Here is what they aren’t telling you. Supplier B is likely quoting you on 0.3mm or 0.4mm material. This is “paper thin” steel often meant for temporary fencing, not permanent roofing. In the harsh Gauteng sun and hail, that roof will vibrate loose and dent within two seasons.
The Authority Rule: Always ask for 0.5mm Full Hard steel. If a supplier hesitates to confirm the thickness in writing, walk away.
2. The Rust Rating (The “Z” Factor)
Steel rusts. That is a fact of physics. To stop this, manufacturers coat the steel in zinc. The thickness of this zinc coating determines how long your roof lasts before it turns brown.
- Z100: This is the economy standard. It is fine for inland areas if you paint it regularly.
- Z275: This is the industrial gold standard.
Many budget suppliers sell Z100 material at Z275 prices. You won’t know the difference until three years later when the rust bleeds through.
3. The “Accessory” Markup
This is where the profit is hidden. You might find a supplier selling sheets at a rock bottom price just to get your attention.
But then you look at the screws. They charge R500 for a packet of screws that should cost R250. They charge double for the flashings (the angular pieces that seal the edges).
They know you are focused on the price of the big sheets, so they rob you on the small parts.
